Sunday Serenade is one of our periodicals here at GTG, which we decided to start up because of our love for Asian music.
What we do for Sunday Serenade is simple: we recommend music videos for you to watch (three at a time). Our main goal is to develop everyone’s
vocabulary in Asian music, showcasing videos from all over (including Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, etc). We will show videos both new and old. Basically, we want to make an Asian music fan out of you.
That being said, let’s get jamming!
This week’s Sunday Serenade theme: New Voices
The week we’ll be exploring some new music from relatively new artists! This round’s selection consists of a solo artist, a duo, and a four-person group. Having entered the music scene some time in the year of 2012, here are three artists you can keep your eyes – or ears – peeled for! Without further ado, let’s bring out the rookies of 2012!
harukatomiyuki – “Vanilla”
Genre: soft rock
Country: Japan
Year: 2012
First up, we have our newest group of the three – harukatomiyuki. This two woman duo will make their debut on November 14th with their first EP, in which “Vanilla” is one of the tracks. Their unique style seen in the music video and their mellow voices leaves me anticipating their upcoming EP and for more music coming from them in the future.
Tiina Kariina – “Anta”
Genre: pop
Country: Japan
Year: 2012
First appearing to public with her self-titled album, Tiina Kariina, this Osaka-born singer-songwriter brings to us her song, “Anta.” This song is special in that it is sung in the Osaka dialect, something rarely heard in Japanese music. It is a song of longing for a loved one, and it has been described by listeners as warm and homey, bringing tears to many eyes.
aquarifa – “closet”
Genre: rock
Country: Japan
Year: 2012
This four-member band first came out in April with their first official mini album titled scene. Since then, they had already participated in the annual huge summer music festival, SUMMER SONIC 2012 as well as another music event, MINAMI WHEEL 2012, hosted by Panasonic. This song, “closet”, is included in the album scene and definitely worth a listen!
Stay tuned next week for more tunes!
