GTG Mixtape

Current playlist date:

Design done by Raymaru

Summer is at its peak. Hopefully everyone is enjoying the break and the nice weather. What are you doing this summer? Are you traveling to a foreign country? Visiting friends or relatives you haven't seen in a while? Catching up on your reading? Shutting yourself in and playing video games? Spending more time in the sun? Well, this month's Mixtape's theme is what many of us love to do, especially during the peak of summer: Party at the Beach.

So what images come to mind when you hear those words? Is it the bikini-clad babes playing volleyball? Is it relaxing on a chair while enjoying a nice, cool drink? Is it the meeting of that summer love? Is it the sadness of saying goodbye to that love? How about traveling with friends on you're an adventure? Maybe it's having fun in the ocean, partying on your personal yacht?

We asked our staffers at GTG what the words Party at the Beach meant to them, and also what songs best illustrate those words for us to enjoy. Please take a listen and we wish you well on your journey to the beach.

Driftjunky13's featured songs

Kuriyama Chiaki, Galveston 19, Teddyloid

"I chose these songs mainly because it goes like a story: the search for a spot on the beach, a competitive game of football on the hot sand, and checking out hot women in bikinis with a few cold beers."

Pineapple Pocky's featured song

Kaji Hideki

"What's a nice hot summer party at the beach need? Something sweet to top everything off with! And here's the perfect song that'll bring happy smiles to everyone's faces."

Orange Range, Locolotion

"Howdy folks! I probably could have picked randomly from a list of every song Orange Range has ever made, and it would STILL be appropriate for a party at the beach. Their music just screams summertime fun, and I have a lot of fond memories of rocking out to "Locolotion" in the car with friends. Bright, happy and easy to sing along too, "Locolotion" is a perfect song to play when you and your friends are chilling by the water."

Deshi's featured songs

Tohoshinki, Folder 5

"When I think of the beach, I think of the sea, and when I think of the sea it only leads to one thing: One Piece. Whether it's with strangers, friends, family or nakama, many of this show's openings are merry upbeat songs that anyone can dance and party to."

Hai's featured song

AKB48

"The song is catchy and has a fun bounce to it which reminisces to the feeling of being with friends at the beach."

Davey D's featured songs

Bomb Factory, Samurai Attack, Snail Ramp

"I've got a deep, heartfelt love for all things related to punk, especially if it's ska. It's a great base-genre because, no matter what the language is, you can almost always feel what the songs are about. As for these being on my summer playlist, these songs have a great up-tempo beat and amazing energy behind the guitar work and vocals - especially in the case of Bomb Factory's 'Viper'"

Jangta's featured songs

m-flo, oriental funk stew, 3rd coast

"M-flo knew how to party at the beach with this popular song from their 'Love Series'. The duo of many musical genres partied like it was 2006 with Hinouchi Emi and Ryohei. This song brought back many memories of Raymaru, myself, and other friends awaiting every knew M-flo release during their "Love Series" era (2003 - 2007). The song reminded me of not only about the beach, but about friendship, good times, and how awesome M-flo is!

As for the beach, to me it's about feeling of relaxing. The beach is where you can leave behind your stress and unwind. From the ocean waves crashing by, the gentle breeze you feel near the coast, barbecues, and of course, the girls, these all make up the sandy coastal dunes to me. Verbal would definitely agree with me on the last part with the ladies. Throughout the entire video, he's checking out all the beautiful ladies in his MV. He even uses a girl's butt as a turntable, oh my! Verbal, that's not how you treat a lady... but I'll forgive you!"

3rd Coast's 'Luv is True' is my 2nd pick. I feel that this group is incredibly underrated in the Korean music scene. For fans of the DJ MAX scene or lovers of Korean indie music, 3rd Coast is well known for their unique beats. The Korean funk, house, R&B, and electronica scenes are among the best in the world. 3rd Coast is one reason this is true.

Nearly all of their songs are relaxing or upbeat to me; qualities that I associate the beach with. Their jams give me both inspiration and a sense that everything's going to be okay. 'Luv is True' tells me that dreams can be achieved, that you don't need to stress over everything, and to enjoy each day. Isn't having fun what life should be about? I know the next time I head over to the beach to kick back and relax, 3rd Coast will definitely be on my IPod.

Oriental Funk Stew's 'Deep Inside of Love' featuring Lyn is my 3rd song. This song (like many songs in the house genre) has a very chill, laid-back, relaxing feel to it. Similar to what you'd find on the beach. In fact, I had a chance to meet them last year at Korea's mud festival, as they were one of the indie bands to show up. They did not disappoint. With Oriental Funk Stew's house melodies and kickin' back at the beach, it was an incredible weekend.

YUI

"I have always liked beaches best at sunrise and sunset. Whether it be in the early morning before the rest of the world awakes, or at dusk, as the sky turns slowly into the evening. I can think of nothing better than walking along the sand, listening to the ebb and flow of the waves as they gently lap against the shore.

And while I have never been one for beach parties per-se, I have fond memories of bonfires by the sea lasting late into the evening, where the last snatches of conversation are shared amidst stray embers and the quiet reflection of distant stars. Until all you are left with are scattered recollections and a vague sense of loss. While I realise I can never recapture such moments, it is nice to look back on occasion and remember... but acknowledge that we must all move on, eventually.

And so, YUI's song and role, from the film Taiyou no Uta (Song of the Sun/Midnight Sun) in which she lived by the sea, longing for the sun, but was unable to truly appreciate it. Living a half-life compared to what most of us are entitled, yet making the most of those moments she did have, seems somehow apt. "

+Plus, AAA

"Upon hearing the word 'summer' and 'beach,' one would undoubtedly think: 'FUN'...and fun is exactly what emerges through the speakers when +Plus comes on. With its fast beat and lively lyrics, "FIESTA" successfully creates the feeling of a fiesta, a party, being fun to sing as well as to dance to. Listening to this song makes it easy to imagine oneself partying it up, be it at a beach or anywhere else!

Second, AAA shows their audience through their cute "Get Chu!," the idea of being daring. Summer seems to be the perfect season to venture forward and take a chance. So not only is it the season for beach visits, but it is also a great time to come straight out with your feelings and express them with enough boldness to match the rays of the summer sun! "

Bennie K, AAA, Porno Graffiti

"To me, 'summer' is synonymous with the Japanese word deai, or "a meeting by chance." Many of us who travel during the summer meet new and exciting personalities that we may never encounter during a regular day. These personalities range from a would-be summer fling, a partner to laugh with and share drinks at the bar, or even a local who knows all the secret fun spots in town. My contributions are dedicated to those deai. The meeting of different people, whether it be a hot babe or drinking partner, is essential (and sometimes unavoidable) in this period of fun we call summer."
