1 dead, over a dozen injured after the devastating tornado in Fultondale, Ala.

One person was killed and at least 30 people were injured when a tornado pierced Fultondale late Monday night. Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates confirms there was one fatality related to the Fultondale tornado. No further details were released from Yates. Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight said a “young man” was killed after a large tree fell on his family’s home. Knight said the victim was huddled in the basement with his father when the tree fell. The father was injured and taken to the hospital. Jefferson County Schools’ superintendent, Dr. Walter Gonsoulin said a 14-year-old student was killed in the storm. The teenager’s name was not published. We are in touch with the local school systems as they continue to evaluate and commit to supporting these schools. I offer my prayers and my deepest compassion and pledge the full support and resources our state has to offer. I am with you, Fultondale! “says Fultondale Fire Department chief Justin McKenzie, although he cannot confirm the deaths as of Tuesday morning, 17 people were hospitalized with storm-related injuries brought and treated 11 people on site. Local first responders have assisted Fultondale with search and rescue operations throughout the night. As of 4:15 a.m., the crews were on the heavily damaged Lykes Blvd. Working to rescue a man trapped by a tree in his home.
