It’s fair to say that the huge two-tone industrial design of the PlayStation 5 isn’t for everyone, and now Dbrand says there is a solution. The company best known for their custom phone skins and cases has Sell ”Darkplates”with the promise that the precisely carved plastic panels will turn your PS5 into a dead black piece of hardware.
This isn’t just an unofficial accessory – Dbrand is actively encouraging Sony to sue it for bringing the product out. The background there is that it was a small company, first PlateStation5, then CustomizeMyPlates Orders for a similar product must be canceled and refunded last year after legal action by Sony. Now the Dbrand order page says “Come on, sue us” at the top.
The spur doesn’t stop there. Dbrands Darkplate has a texture that is somewhat inspired by that PlayStation button icons micro texture found on the PS5 and its controller. The company describes it as “a familiar, but legally different apocalyptic variant of the classic PlayStation button shapes”.
The darkplate also has an optional skin for the glossy black center section of the PS5 in case you want to customize its color or make it less of a breeding ground for fingerprints. In addition to the matt black option, there are simple yellow and white skins as well as patterns such as “robot camouflage” and “redcode”.
Converting your PS5 to matte black isn’t all that cheap and might not be as quick. A set of plates costs $ 49 plus shipping, while adding a medium skin increases the base price to $ 60.95. All three product waves, which are to be delivered in February, March and April, have been sold out in the last few hours, while a fourth wave for May can now be reordered. The PS5 Digital Edition version of the plates has not yet been put on sale.
