It’s been almost eight years since BTS went to Stage for her debut performance. At the Grammy Awards on SundayThe seven men from South Korea will have more premieres. They are ready for the best pop duo / group performance for “Dynamite”, their English hit hit. It marks the group’s first nomination as well as the first for a K-pop group. They’re ready to perform, and it’ll be the first time they’re armed with any of their own songs (they made a cameo at the 2020 Grammys, but more on that later).
For RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, making history and breaking records is nothing new.
You are the first K-pop group to debut at the top of Billboards Hot 100. They hold the Guinness World Records for the most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours (“Dynamite” reached 101 million views). They broke their own record for the best-selling South Korean album of all time.
Along the way, they’ve won a legion of extremely loyal fans called ARMY (full disclosure: I’m one of them).
“We’re very excited, it still feels surreal,” Jimin told USA TODAY via an interpreter. “We’re still thinking about what to do with it. But we know this is a great honor and we are deeply grateful. We are trying our best to do a great job and to give back all the support we have received from our fans. “
BTS ‘trip to the Grammys
In 2018 during a Interview with Jimmy FallonBTS was asked what they wanted next in their career and Suga said, “Go to the Grammys.” The rest of the boys laughed lightly when Suga answered. It wasn’t the first time he’d expressed this wish.
A few months later, BTS flew out to attend 2019 Grammys as presenterswhere they walked the red carpet promising that they would “come back”.
In 2020 they performed on stage while Lil Nas X’s performance of “Old Town Road”. In one Behind the scenes video from the eventMembers reaffirmed how much they would love the opportunity to perform their own song one day.
And that brings us to now. A nomination and finally a chance to perform.
“(A) Achievement is what we wanted more, even more than a nomination or a win,” said RM. “We’re a performance team, so performing with our own song was one of our last dreams for this whole trip. We’re flattered and excited at the same time.”
Even so, it would be of great importance to take home a gold-plated gramophone trophy.
“We grew up with the Grammys. It’s one of the biggest awards and a win would mean a lot to us, ”said J-Hope.
What ‘dynamite’ now represents to BTS
After almost seven months and a list of awards, “Dynamite” has achieved its goal Purpose to elevate fans? Absolutely, said Suga.
“It shows how much ARMY loves us,” he said. “We wanted to give consolation with ‘Dynamite’ under the circumstances, and we have a feeling that a lot of people resonated with this song even in such difficulties.”
For RM the song was a gateway to new possibilities. “For eight years when we had trouble and very bad things outside or inside, we always found a way and we had this virus last year and everyone was confused and lost and ‘dynamite’ gave us more than ‘dynamite, “And now it symbolizes a kind of possibility, a staircase into another world.”
What made BTS ranked in the music industry?
“Of course it’s ARMY,” said Jungkook.
V also included the other members, her label BigHit Entertainment, family and friends, who “helped us all to grow and move forward step by step”.
Suga said, “When the nominations came out and (we) were supposed to perform, we were obviously overjoyed, but our fans seemed a lot happier than us. We always think: Would all of this have been possible without the ARMY? “
ARMY has become a point of pride for the group, thanking their fans for every achievement and milestone.
“There are so many blessings that we could have received for these eight years, but I think for the entire trip, the best luck we have ever had has been to have all of you around the world,” said RM. “So please don’t forget whether we get the Grammys or not, we already got what we wanted and we have you, that is, we have it all.”
What’s next for BTS?
2020 brought BTS ups and downs. They started the year with the release of their album Map of the Soul: 7, a look back at their musical journey. Shortly afterwards, BTS had to postpone its much-anticipated world tour due to the coronavirus pandemic.
They released one later in the year self-directed album, a more intimate and personal work dealing with the pandemic, in the form of “BE”. So they got one second debut No. 1 on the Hot 100 with the title track “Life Goes On”. The first Korean language song to top the list.
In 2020, BTS were named The entertainer of the time of year and one of Wall Street Journal Innovators. They were the best-selling act in the world and ranked number one on the IFPI’s list of global artists.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2021, her top priority is meeting ARMY again. “The vaccines started rolling,” said Jin. “If the situation allows, our priority would be to hold a concert with our fans. We also work on individual songs and also meet for group songs. So stay tuned for new things to come out. “
