Gruden was wearing the old hat – a black hat with Oakland Raiders in white letters. The veteran head coach seemed to have found out about the hat and switched it back to a Las Vegas Raiders cap at some point in the first half.
He turned to the chargers after the team lost overtime.
“I apologize for not wearing the right hat. Someone played a pretty good trick on me,” said Gruden.
The Raiders and Chargers fought against it in extra time. Las Vegas had a long first drive that ended with a field goal and then it only took the team a defensive stop to win the game.
Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert had other plans when he threw a long pass to build the game-winning streak. Herbert would eventually let the ball run into the end zone for the touchdown and win.
Gruden said he was proud of the way his team played.
“I want to say that I’m really proud of our team. We lost a lot of men tonight and we missed a lot of men. [Marcus] Mariota came in and did a great job. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t find a way to win this game in the end, it’s up to me, “he said.
Mariota replaced the starting quarterback Derek Carrwho left the game with a groin injury and did not return.
