Sony wants a bigger slice of the drone market. Today the Japanese giant unveiled a project called Airpeakwhich will “support the creativity of video artists as much as possible” a cryptic press release. It sounds like Sony is looking to take on consumer-centric drone manufacturers like DJI, Parrot and Skydio. Which makes a lot of sense, given Sony’s expertise in the EU compact and full frame mirrorless camera Markets. If you’re a vlogger or independent filmmaker who already uses Sony gear, a drone with similar technology might tempt you. If nothing else, it would be easier to color correct the footage and combine it.
In the press release, however, Sony notes how drones have led to “workflow efficiency and energy savings in the industrial sector”. It adds, “Sony has hired the Airpeak brand to reflect their desire to contribute to the advancement and creation of unprecedented value in the drone field through its imaging and sensor technology and 3R (Real-Time and Remote) technologies. “So is it a consumer game or a company game? We hope it is the former. The Company already has Aerosense – a business oriented one Drone cooperation with ZMP – Specialized in surveying, recording live events and creating maps from drone images.
