Minshew Mania may be running out.
Jaguars starting quarterback Gardner Minshew are at risk of being benched if he continues fighting, multiple sources say, and that could happen today against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The media treasure, who has become a cult hero in Jacksonville thanks to his mustache, quick wit and inclination to jorts, could be replaced by backup Mike Glennon. At one point, it seemed like Minshew might be the future QB in Jacksonville. Much of this is now in doubt unless it can play out.
If Minshew struggles and is replaced by Glennon – who was the only other active QB on match day – the team will likely use the goodbye to reassess their QB situation.
Jacksonville collaborated with Glennon to design the raw but talented Oregon State Jake Luton, and he was ultimately able to influence the decision. Both heavily armed throwers have a different style than Minshew but have sometimes impressed in practice.
The Jaguars have lost five in a row as Minshew contributed four fumbles with five interceptions. That season he’s 162 out of 240 (67.5 percent) for 1,682 yards with 11 touchdowns. Much of his production is behind schedule with the team.
Head coach Doug Marrone didn’t rule out the move this week, telling reporters he was “naive not to say” it was a possibility.
Minshew’s part tries to find the positive.
“We all have people trying to band together to find solutions,” he said. “We have had some great conversations this week.”
