An inmate was alleged on Sunday of fatally stabbing a lawyer and injuring him for a second in an Indiana prison.
The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. local time at Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, about 34 miles west of South Bend, the Indiana State Police said in a statement.
Both officers were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where police say an officer was pronounced dead upon arrival. The second officer was in serious condition, police said.
On Monday, the LaPorte County’s coroner office identified the officer who died fatally as a 57-year-old Lt. Gene Lasco was stabbed to death. Further details were not immediately available.
An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Tymetri Campbell, 38, an inmate at Indiana State Prison, faces multiple charges, including murder pending investigation, police said. Further details were not immediately available.
Campbell is currently serving a 130-year sentence after pleading guilty in connection with a shooting in 2002 that resulted in the death of three people. WUNSCH-TV reported.
He tried to break his conviction in a 2007 appeal, apologizing for “being there at the time of death,” and saying he “actually didn’t kill anyone,” the station said. A judge denied the appeal, saying Campbell’s testimony “did not acknowledge the responsibility,” the broadcaster reported.
